A Penn State University study compared MESA with other nitrogen sources to evaluate how efficiently turf plants absorb and retain nitrogen. The study focused on three key areas: volatility loss, nitrogen loss in clippings, and nitrogen storage in the turf crown.

Volatility Loss – Gaseous Loss to the Environment

Volatilisation is the process where ammonium converts to ammonia gas and escapes into the atmosphere. This is a major nitrogen loss pathway, especially with straight urea. In the study:

√  Straight urea lost 34.4% of applied nitrogen.

√  Stabilised nitrogen lost 17.1%.

√  MESA lost only 2.4%, making it the most efficient at minimising gaseous loss.

Nitrogen Loss in Clippings

When nitrogen is rapidly absorbed, it often fuels excessive leaf blade growth, leading to frequent mowing and nutrient loss through clippings. Over the first 30 days:

√  Stabilised nitrogen lost 0.15 kg/100 m²

√  PCU lost 0.13 kg/100 m²

√  MESA lost only 0.07 kg/100 m²

Stored Nitrogen in the Turf Crown

The crown is the plant’s growth hub, producing new shoots and roots. Retaining nitrogen here is vital for turf health and recovery. The study found:

√  Stabilised urea stored 0.02 kg/100 m²

√  PCU stored 0.04 kg/100 m²

√  MESA stored 0.08 kg/100 m²
